BOARD GAME 9 DESIGN BACKGROUND
How can ‘real life’ supply demand mechanics be part of a game? The effort to achieve this is what drove a lot of the game design. The first step to make this work is to properly design the board’s economy. The board’s economy is driven by requiring all players to use certain resources to move around the board. That is the demand. To obtain resources players must purchase them from properties on the board as they travel. That is the supply. The competition in general would be between the players and in particular would come from properties of the same function type that are located close to each other.
Another idea incorporated in the game was the idea of an “enclosed economy”. There is no AI bank in this game. There is no AI players in the game. All the money that exists for the duration of the game is what the 4 players started off with. 100% of the money a player gains comes from another player and about 95% of the money a player looses is to another player. This mechanic helped maximize the interaction between the players.
Also included is the idea of trading stock. But the only companies/firms that a player can trade with are the companies/firms owned by other players. End game mechanics are included to provide an incentive for some players to want to raise cash by giving up ownership of their firm. And there is an incentive for other players to give cash for a percentage of other player’s firms. The trading that happens at the end of match can get pretty fun and interesting.
